Breaking Free From Generational Curses

What is a generational curse? To precisely answer that question you must first know what is a regular curse.  A curse by definition is the calling forth of spiritual powers to bring punishment or harm to a person.  Cursing was usually reserved for the most wicked of people who carried out evil deeds upon the earth. Individuals who live without morality, conscience, respect for human decency, or the fear of God.  Individuals who persist in evil, and because of their earthly position (of riches, power, and fame) human government may not be able to hold them accountable.  Yet, a curse against that person can bring the person’s life down to nothing.

If you curse a person, their lives are brought down to destruction, but at the same time, that curse can execute double judgment upon you for uttering the curse. Now if you curse someone, who God has blessed, then you reproach God. The curse you pronounce upon them returns to you sevenfold.  Psalms 79:12,  “And render unto our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.” This is why God tells us not to curse anyone.  The Bible says in Roman 12:14 “Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.”  But are we to let evil run amuck and have its way? No there are many effective things you can do from a spiritual legal standpoint to put a stop to evil, but using a curse is not one of them.

If someone does us wrong, we are not to get even with them or curse them back.  To do so violates God’s WORD that covers and shields our lives as blessed people.  When a Christian disobeys God and starts cursing people, they bring themselves under the power of retaliation that comes from pronouncing a curse on others. So, what then are we to do? Pray and tell God about it.  God as the Righteous Judge can curse them and there is no retaliation against Him for all He does is perfect and righteous. God told Abraham in Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you.”

So, a generational curse is a curse that stays in long effect to bring down the lives of people in a wicked person’s family for generation after generation.  It usually comes because a person lived so wickedly in their day that all of their generations for years to come are affected by their level of evil and wickedness.  Think of Hitler, how his family, descendants, and all connected to him are despised and hated because of the level of evil that he did in his lifetime.

God says in Exodus 34:7 “Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

Is there any hope of rescue? Yes, each person must come to Jesus Christ individually to renounce the evil deeds and covenants of their fore-parents.  They must not only confess salvation by faith but then walk in the righteousness of God to oppose the evil they once embraced. It is a sign of true repentance. If they know specifically what evil their fore-parents did (killing native Americans, owning slaves or enslaving people, doing witchcraft, stealing people’s land, committing murder, abortions, rape, incest, homosexuality, bestiality, pedophilia, prostitution, etc Exodus- Chp 18 and Chp 20). They must repent. They must turn away from iniquity and walk in faith and righteousness with God to truly be delivered from the power of a generational curse.
